Parents Under Pressure

Module 8: Support Networks

Raising children is a daunting and unrelenting job. Ideally parents have support people around to turn to when life becomes difficult. Family, friends, and neighbours can be good sources of support. Unfortunately, high-risk parents are often socially isolated. Through past actions, many have limited their support networks and need to learn to trust others and ask for help.

The emphasis is not only on identifying support people, but also helping parents to accept what help is on offer. Often parents under pressure feel that asking for help is a sign they are not coping.

In Module 8 of the Parents Under Pressure program parents are helped to reconnect with friends, family, and community, and learn to accept support. Increased community involvement includes becoming involved with a child's pre-school or school by volunteering to help in the classroom or on outings etc.
